Homemade Hair Recipes

Here are some easy to make recipes with items you can probably find in your kitchen. I have tried all of these and highly recommend them! You can purchase essential oils from a health food/vitamin store or online.

Essential oils are very powerful, so be sure to dilute, dilute, dilute. You may want to play with amounts of the ingredients in the recipes. These recipes can be used by all hair types. You may need measuring spoons to accurately measure the items. Have fun!

MotownGirl's Leave-In Conditioner

Double up the recipe as needed and substitute ingredients as you need. It's a thick mixture and it should be applied to soaking wet or damp hair best of all - you don't need to use much! It will provide your hair with the perfect mixture of sheen, softness, curl definition, moisture and fragrance! It does not leave build up on my hair.

The consistency should be somewhat thick - but it does depend on the type of conditioner you use. It works best with thick, heavy conditioners such as Suave Humectant, Eluence or Pantene Hydrating Curls. The type of oil does not matter, except Wildgrowth - that smell is overpowering and may not go well with the scent of the conditioner. PLEASE NOTE - If you purchase the conditioner that is featured above, you do not need to add Vegetable Glycerin or any oils because they are included in the conditioner (shea butter).

MotownGirl's Homemade Spritz

If you find that your hair does not repsond to direct oils or hair butters, try this mixture for softness and mucho moisture!

Simply pour ingredients into spray bottle and shake well (be sure to leave some room to be able to shake). I use this mixture for my twists/braids and for freshing up my puffs and "out styles". It gives me the perfect mixture of moisture, softness and sheen! (This is a watery mixture).

Rosemary Honey Conditioner

This conditioner blends honey for shine, the essential oil of rosemary to stimulate hair growth and olive oil seals in moisture.

Place all the ingredients in a small bowl and mix thoroughly. Pour into a clean plastic bottle with a tight fitting stopper or lid. Apply a small amount at a time to slightly dampened hair. Massage scalp and work mixture through hair until completely coated. Cover hair with a warm towel (towel can be heated in a microwave or dryer) or shower cap; leave on to nourish and condition for 30 minutes. Remove towel or shower cap; shampoo lightly and rinse with cool water. Dry as normal and enjoy shinier, softer and healthier hair the natural way. (Thank you Ericka.)

Herbal Egg Conditioner (Pre-shampoo treatment)

Add the lemon juice and honey to the egg and beat together. Pour mixture into top of double boiler and heat. Stir until it is warm and creamy. Let cool. Mix the rosemary oil in the vegetable oil and slowly add it to the egg mixture. Leave this mixture in with a plastic cap for at least 15 - 30 minutes then shampoo out.

Honey/Olive Oil Conditioner

Directions: This mixture will help to make your hair softer and shinier. Heat the honey in the microwave and mix the ingridents in a bowl. Work a small amount at a time through hair until coated. Cover hair with a shower cap; leave on 30 minutes. Remove shower cap; shampoo well and rinse. Dry as normal.

Protein Conditioner

  • 1 egg white
  • 5 tbs plain yogurt

Directions: This will help to strengthen your hair. Beat 1 egg white until foamy. Add to 5 TBS's plain natural yogurt. Apply to hair in small sections at a time. Leave in for 15 minutes. Rinse and follow up with a moisturizing deep conditioner for wonderful results!

Caribbean Queen Conditioner
This mixture was given to me from a friend. Women in her family use this mixture to protect their hair from the climate and sun.

Combine all ingredients, and whisk thoroughly. After shampooing, massage conditioner through your hair and cover with a plastic shower cap. Leave on for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.

Hair Clarifier

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1/2 cup lemon

Directions: Mix the ingredients together and pour over your head. Massage gently and let it sit for 10 minutes Rinse out, condition and style. Leaves the hair clean and smelling great! (This recipe won't work if you use a lot of oils and heavy styling products).

Lemon/Honey Rinse

  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 4 cups warm water

Directions: Combine in a large bowl. After washing hair, pour mixture through hair. Don't wash out. Dry as usual.

Hair Sheen Rinse

  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 4 cups warm water

Directions:  Mix ingredients. After shampooing, pour mixture through hair. Do not rinse out. Dry as normal.

Cucumber/Oil Hair Treatment

  • 1 egg
  • 1 eggshell's worth of olive oil
  • 1 quarter of a peeled cucumber

This mixture is good for those who swim in a pool often. Blend the egg, olive oil and peeled cucumber. Spread evenly through your hair, leave on for 10 minutes, then thoroughly rinse. (Thank you Kim).

Hair Growth Mixture

Place ingredients in a container and mix well. Use one finger to dip into the mixture and gently massage into the area.

The ingredients are known to aid in hair growth, which is perfect for helping regrow the hairline. It is fine to use a little every night, only if you clean your hair often (at least a few times per week). It's important to rinse off the heavy oils so they won't clog your hair follicles - which can cause itches and slow down hair growth. Note, you can purchase all of these items from a health food/vitamin store or online!

Or try this premade Hair Growth Oil as an alternative.

MotownGrl's Scalp Energizer

Directions: Place ingredients in a spray bottle and spray directly on scalp. This will leave your scalp feeling alive and smelling great! Shake well before each use. This relieves an itchy scalp or that uncomfortable feeling I get when my hair is growing. It can also encourage hair growth.

Egg & Honey Treatment
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond oil
  • 1 tablespoon yogurt

Mix together apply to hair and let site for at least an half hour.

Olive Oil Treatment (Hot oil treatment for dry hair)

  • 1/4 to 1/2 c olive oil
  • 1 plastic cap or plastic grocery bag

Heat oil in the microwave until warm. For easy application, carefully pour the olive oil into a spray bottle to the ends and dry parts of your hair (avoid getting it on your scalp). You can use your fingers too, but I found the spray bottle to easier. After you have applied the olive oil, put on an old shower cap or a plastic grocery bag (I prefer the grocery bag).

For a deeper treatment, wrap a hot towel around the shower cap and leave on your hair for at least one hour. Apply shampoo directed to your hair without water first, then slowly work the water in. You can choose to use conditioner afterwards if you wish. Make sure you rinse it out in the kitchen or bathroom sink - not in the shower!

Egg & Olive Oil Hair Treatment

Mix well and smooth through hair. Wrap head with plastic wrap, and leave in hair for 10 minutes. Rinse well, shampoo then style.

Homemade Scented Hair Gel

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbls. flax seed
  • 2 drops scented essential oil of your choice

Directions: Combine water and seeds in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil then remove from heat. Allow setting for a half an hour. Strain through fine colander. When completely cooled, add scented oil. Transfer to a wide-mouthed jar with lid. Use as you would any hair gel product.

Baking Soda Clarifying Treatment

  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 cup warm water (I use 2 cups - the warm water helps the baking soda to dissolve)

Directions:  Use this mixture if your hair is starting to feel yucky and to help get rid of build-up. It will leave your hair clean and 'sheeny' without that hard, stripped feeling. Combine ingredients in a cup or spray bottle. Double/triple the recipe as needed for longer/thicker hair. It may not seem like a lot, but DO NOT use more baking soda. Your hair WILL become hard and brittle...trust me! Spray or pour the mixture on your hair and work it through your hair. Allow the mixture sit in the hair for about one minute then rinse out well. I follow this up with a deep conditioner then with an ACV mix.

Note - this mixture is not harsh (there is only one tablespoon of baking soda being used) and the mixture is liquidity...NOT gritty. With the small amount of baking soda and the warm water, it dissolve into a grayish like mixture. (Thanks to the Curly Girl Book.)

Apple Cider Vinegar Mix

  • 1-2 tbs. apple cider vinegar
  • 2 cups room temperature distilled water
  • A couple drops sage oil (optional)

Mix items together and use as a final rinse after shampooing and conditioning or conditioner washing.

Scalp Scrub

Combine mixture, apply to damp scalp. In soft circular motions, move around your scalp to exfoliate. Rinse well or shampoo. (Thanks to the Curly Girl Book.)

Lemon-Aid Clarifying Treatment

  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (from a store bought or from a lemon)
  • Your usual amount of conditioner

Directions:  Mix together, apply and work through hair. Rinse out and style. This will leave your hair and scalp clean! Note - this recipe won't work if you have a lot of products in your hair. (Thanks to the Curly Girl Book.)
