MG Spotlight: Latonia
Q. Where are you from and how is the natural scene there? A. I currently live in Gastonia,
North Carolina, which is a small town outside of Charlotte. The natural scene
here is maybe 1 in 50, but in Charlotte it is growing at a fast pace. Q. Did you transition to natural hair? If so, what were your experiences? A. I reached my one year
natural anniversary on October 17, 2009 and I transitioned for five months.
After my big chop, I thought I made a mistake, but after I realized the freedom
I had from relaxers, I had no regrets. Q. Did you have any support? A. I received support from
my inner circle, which includes my husband and our children. Anything outside
the circle really doesn't matter. A. It's wonderful to have
the freedom to be me natural and not worry about what others may think. Q. What advice would you give someone who was thinking of going natural? A. Do it...As EnVogue would
stay, "Free your mind, and the rest will follow." Being natural allows
for freedom. People that are on the fence about going natural may look towards
you for inspiration. Q. Any final thoughts? A. Make sure that your hair
stays healthy, no matter the type of climate you may live in -- this is essential.
