Dear Kelli: I’m in the process of going natural. To start the transition I’ve had braids and then a few quick weaves. I haven’t had a relaxer in five months. I am now doing natural hair styles but I did not cut out the rest of the processed hair. Should I cut it out or can I let it grow out?
Kelli: If you are choosing to grow out your relaxer by not wearing your hair out at all, cutting it would not be a bad idea. It can take at least a year for it all to grow out depending on the person. During that time you can experiment with full sew-in weaves, braids, or your own natural styles but please leave quick weaves alone. They are damaging and will defeat the point of transitioning.
