What inspired you to start your business?

I am an HR professional by trade, however, I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit.  Embarking on a business venture was about perfect timing - creating the right product or service that I could be passionate about and profit from at the same time. Out of curiosity one day in 2006, I decided to pick up a new hobby and randomly chose crocheting.

At the time, I didn't know anyone my age who knew the craft and I wanted a hobby that I considered to be unique.    Last summer, I was on a mad hunt for crochet earrings and only found one pair online.  Since I had already mastered making caps and scarves, I figured I should end my hunt and make the perfect pair of earrings myself ... which I did!

Spontaneity, a name that reflects how I started crocheting as well as describes my creative process when developing new products, was launched in April 2008 because, through that experience, I saw an opportunity to introduce products to the fashion community that were creative and unique.

What does your business offer customers?

Currently, Spontaneity offers funky, customizable handmade crochet jewelry.  In the future, the line will expand to offer accessories such as hats, scarves, and my second accessory favorite – handbags!  Regardless of the item, Spontaneity customers have the option to customize color and size.

What do you love the most about being running your business?

The sense of reward and accomplishment that comes from receiving admiration, support, and patronage for your work is priceless.  Also, true satisfaction comes from knowing that as a business owner, YOU directly benefit financially from your hard work and YOU have the power to shape, grow, and direct your business the way you see fit.

What makes your business unique?

First and foremost, Spontaneity offers customers a personal, customized experience.  Just as I sought to learn a unique craft and differentiate my talents from others in my peer group, Spontaneity was created to do just that – STAND OUT.  While there is the option to purchase several ready-made styles, customers have the opportunity to use the interactive “CUSTOMIZE” feature on the site or contact me personally to design an item that fits their personalities and distinct sense of style.

As a woman, I personally understand the desire to have your own style, your own look, and not worry about walking into a room and seeing someone else with the same dress or shoes as you! People like one-of-a-kind treasures, especially when they can design them themselves, so this aspect of my business significantly differentiates it from other jewelry and accessory lines.

Where are your goals for your business in the future?

In terms of short-term goals, as previously mentioned, I plan to expand the line to offer accessories.  Since Spontaneity is a relatively new company, another immediate goal is to become more established in the local Chicago fashion community through press exposure and product placement in exclusive boutiques.  Long term goals include national and global media exposure and product placement.

Any your final thoughts etc.?
Thanks to everyone in advance for your support, whether you simply take time to view the site, tell a friend, or purchase an item (or two!).  Be sure to submit your information on the site’s Contact Form and to receive future updates regarding the line and to let me know you stopped by!

Most importantly, thanks to Alisha of Motown Girl for supporting small business owners such as myself and for being a powerful and much-needed resource for the natural hair care community.
