How did your business start? I started my business, Soul Sister Natural Haircare in 1997, because when I first went natural in 1994, I had no idea how to care for my hair. I knew there were probably others in the same predicament. I read and studied many books on natural haircare then I started experimenting on my own hair. I realized I had a gift for styling hair so I decided I would become a stylist that worked exclusively on natural hair. What does your business offer customers? Sanctuary. Encouragement. Empowerment. Also some great natural hairstyling! (smile) Starter Locks Lock Maintenance Lock Styling Two-Strand Twists Single-Strand Twists Flat Twists Cornrows Bantu Knots.
I love the freedom of being self-employed. I have been truly blessed to not only know what my passion is in life but I’ve also been able to create a business doing it. What do you love the most about being running your business? My business is unique because I treat each client as an extended member of my family. I don’t over-book my schedule and this allows me to get to know my clients on an individual basis. I also treat people by the golden rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” It hasn’t failed me yet! (smile) How does your business positively contribute to the natural hair community?
A lot of women (and men) have never had a positive hair care experience. Their full and lush manes have often been met with disdain and aggravation by impatient and over-booked stylists. They don’t have to fret about that at Soul Sister Natural Haircare! What are your goals for your business in the future? In the future I would like for Soul Sister Natural Haircare to continue to thrive and grow. I have a dream that one day all people of color will have chemical-free manes!!! Any final words? Just as much as I love natural hair, I love music. My husband, Christopher Whaley, and I started a magazine called SOBO (Soulful Bohemian) in April 2006. We feature music, poetry and intriguing stories. SOBO is an extension of our creativity. Publishing SOBO has helped me to realize another passion in my life and I have enjoyed the new experiences it has given me. To find out more about SOBO Magazine, please visit www.sobomag.com. I
