MG Spotlight - Chantel

Chantel

Where are you from and how is the natural scene there?
I am from Mobile, Alabama and the natural scene here is almost non-existent. I decided to go natural shortly before my high school graduation in May 2008 and I did the big chop on November 22, 2008!

Did you transition to natural hair? If so, what were your experiences?
The first time I looked at myself in the mirror I was so relieved. Since my mom began perming my hair when I was 3, I had no real idea what my hair would look like in its natural state. All I knew was that my hair was thick and tightly curled as my mom put it. However, none of that mattered to me because I was seeing myself for the first time and I loved it.

Did you have any support?
I actually received the most support from my friends, I think I caught most of my family by surprise when I big chopped, because they had never seen my hair so short.

In your opinion, what has been one of the best things about having natural hair?
1. I conditioner wash every two days - 2. I seal my hair with shea butter and coconut oil for moisture or carols daughter mimosa hair honey. - 3. I deep condition once a week and protein treatment once a month or when needed and lastly I shampoo about every two weeks.

Has there been any differences in your life from going natural?
Wearing natural hair has definitely increased my self esteem. I feel so free now when I walk outside...I have more "pep in my step", and I hold my head higher. It is a great feeling to finally look in the mirror and know the person that is looking back at you is 'truly who you really are'.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had to choose 3 items for your hair, what are three things you would have to have for your hair and why?
1. My conditioner/water spritz - 2. shea butter - 3. water.

What advice would you give someone who was thinking of going natural?
Understand that this hair journey is about you, your hair, and its health and no one else. Educate yourself on the proper way to take care of your hair and be patient. The more you learn the easier the journey will be!

Do you have any final words?
Thank you MotownGirl you are truly an inspiration to me and please keep up the good work!
