Q. Where are you from and how is the natural scene there? A. I am originally from Tallahassee, Florida but I currently live in Orlando, Florida. I find the natural scene here to be scarce, however there are signs that it is trying to blossom. Q. Did you transition to natural hair? If so, what were your experiences? A. I have been natural for the past 16 months and I did the big chop back on January 1, 2008. I decided not to transition long, as I really don't care for the"in-between look". Typically I have worn my hair short -- so it was not a big shock having short natural hair. Q. Did you have any support? A. I received a lot of support from my best friend -- she has been natural for about 5 years. My family on the other hand was not to fond of my "new look" but it took some time before it grew on them. Q. In your opinion, what has been some of the best things about having natural hair? A. For me, the best thing has to be the freedom to wash my hair and go. Now I can have all the windows down in my car and not worry about my hair looking a mess. Not to mention the amount of money I have been able to save (on average close to $300 every 3 months). Another advantage to having natural hair is I now enjoy the opportunity to experiment with different hair styles. Here is a list of some of the products I use: V05 and Suave Conditioners (great for co-washes), Cantu Shea Butter leave in conditioner, African Shea Butter 100%, Natural Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Sheen Spray, Freeman Papaya and Coconut Color Retention Conditioner, Bigelow Mentha Hair Mint-infused conditioner (from Bath and Body Works), Softee Coconut Oil Scalp Conditioner, Proclaim Aloe Styling Gel (alcohol free), and finally Organix Shea Butter Coconut Milk & Tea Tree Mint Conditioner. Q. What advice would you give someone who was thinking of going natural? A. Going natural is truly a journey and you must realize that it takes patience. I recommend reprogramming your mind to specifically take care of your hair. Just because a product works for someone does not necessarily mean it will work for you. MotownGirl.com is a great asset, as well as the information available through the natural hair community on YouTube. When transitioning confidence is a must, don't get caught up with what others think that may not be supportive. As long as you love your hair that is all that matters! Always remember that using conditioner is no longer an option but a necessity. Lastly, if you do not feel confident doing the "big chop" try transitioning to a length where you feel comfortable. Q. Any final thoughts? A. Thank you MG for letting me share my story and keep up the great work! |
