MG Spotlight - KeetaRay

KeetaRay

Where are you from and how is the natural scene there?
I am from Philadelphia, PA, but have been living in Maryland for the last year and a half. I live close to D.C. and the natural scene here is endless. I see women with natural styles every single day.

Did you transition to natural hair? If so, how were your experiences?
I transitioned for 8 months before doing my BC. I have been natural for 3 months now. It seems longer, it just “fits” me.

Did you have any support?
I’d say most people in my life were indifferent, and I don’t think some people believed I’d do it. I received most of my support online, from this site and Fotki, mostly. I have met quite a few women who have encouraged me and given me tons of information. I hope to inspire women in the same way someday.

What has been one of the best things about have natural hair in your experience?
Probably the best thing is that I learned it is so easy. I always thought natural hair was hard to manage and untamable. I learned that natural hair is beautiful, ALL textures. It’s just a matter of finding which products work best for you and keep your hair healthy and looking its best.

Has there been any differences in your life from going natural?
Yes – My confidence level has increased. I always used to associate my looks with my hair. When I cut it, I had nothing to hide behind. It was just me. I also find myself looking into natural products not only for my hair, but my skin, too. I have been reading labels on food products and drinking more water.

How do you maintain your hair?
I co-wash about 2-3 times a week. A little less often now that it’s cold out. I wash with an organic shampoo about every 2 weeks, deep condition every 2 weeks. Every night I twist my hair using a mix of shea butter and coconut oil, and sleep with a satin bonnet. I untwist in the morning and style however I want to wear it. So easy.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had to choose 3 things for your hair, what are three things you would have to have for your hair and why?
I have to absolutely have my unrefined raw shea butter, my extra virgin coconut oil, and water (to drink as well as apply to my hair).

What advice would you give someone who was thinking of going natural?
To do it for them, and no one else. Don’t do it because you think it’s cute at the moment or because your girlfriend did it. Be committed to it, and be PATIENT with your hair once you do it. The growth will come.

Do you have any final comments?
