MG Spotlight - Kim

Kim

Q. Where are you from and how is the natural scene there?

A. I live in Baltimore, Maryland. The natural scene here is divided - I think I see more "natural" weaves than natural hair. At the same time it's pretty diverse here, so you'll see locs, weaves and naturals everywhere.

Q. Did you transition to natural hair? If so, what were your experiences?

A. A couple of years ago I wore weaves often. After each (weave) install, I would cut some of my relaxed hair off. I ended up repeating this routine over the course of two years. During my last install, I realized all my relaxed hair was completely gone. That was when I decided "hey, I like my real hair". For this reason, I didn't realize I was "transitioning" therefore I consider myself to be natural for the past 7 months or so. For over the last month, I have tried something a little different and have started wearing my hair out.

Q. Did you have any support?

A. I did receive a lot of support from my close friends, unfortunately not as much from both my husband and mother. I must honestly say that I'm so pleased with my hair, that I could care less how anybody else feels. Again, its just such a wonderful feeling knowing that this is all me. The *real* me.

Q. Has there been any differences in your life after going natural?

A. My attitude has definitely changed - I use to have a chip on my shoulder, now with my new look, I feel like nothing can stop me! To some people that may sound cliche, but its the truth.

Q. In your opinion, what has been one of the best things about having natural hair?

A. The first thing for me would be not worrying about the weather, I also like having all of the windows down in my car ! (smile) I can just enjoy more things that life has to offer without worrying about how it will affect my hairstyle and that is a great feeling!

Q. If you were stranded on a deserted island and had to choose 3 items for your hair, what are three things you would have to have for your hair and why?

A. 1.) Water 2.) Herbal Essences Hydralicious Reconditioning Conditioner - it makes my hair so soft. 3.) Satin bonnet - no breakage.

Q. How do you maintain your hair?

A. This is new to me that I am still researching and tweaking my routine. One important part of my new routine is I conditioner wash with Herbal Hyrdralicious conditioner two times per week. I have included as a leave in conditioner, I use a moisturizer that I've added olive oil to soften my hair. I also use Eco-Styler (the blue one) as a styling gel. At night I put twists my hair and sleep with a satin scarf. I also plan to do my first deep conditioning treatment soon.

Q. What advice would you give someone who was thinking of going natural?

A.You have to WANT to go natural and not listen to any negative feedback. In the end, you have to be comfortable with who you are and remember that there aren't two heads of hair alike, along with keeping in mind there aren't two identical textures. Find out what works for you and take in as much information as you can and adjust it to make it work for you.

Q. Do you have any final words?

Thank you MotownGirl and sooo many others out there on the web for all the info you all have provided!
