Q: Where are you from and how is the natural scene there?
A: I'm from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the natural hair scene is pretty popular. I see beautiful sistas and brothas rocking afros, locs, braids everyday!
Q: Did you transition to natural hair? If so, what were your experiences?
A: I have been natural for four years now. I did not transition even though that was my first thought - I actually cut my hair off after the stylists at the salon told me I needed a relaxer because my hair was too nappy to comb through. I was so mad because I had relaxer in my hair but I was letting it grow out!
My experiences were both negative and positive at first, some people laughed and told me straight up that my hair was a mess and that I should never have cut it off. Others loved my hair they thought it was beautiful and they eventually became natural also!
Q. Did you have any support?
A: A few friends and my grandmother who was also natural gave me a lot of support. My friends encouraged me everyday to not worry about what others had to say. I also used MotownGirl and Fotki hair albums for inspiration! Thank you ladies!
Q: In your opinion, what has been some of the best things about having natural hair?
A: First of all I am not afraid to go out in the rain anymore lol! I would never go out in the rain before when I had a relaxer, but now I don't care. On a more serious note, I do feel more comfortable in my own skin and I have learned to love myself more.
Q: What is your weekly hair routine?
A: I wash my hair every week and allow conditioner to sit in my hair overnight. When I wash my hair I always put the hair in big braids to make detangling much easier. I use coconut oil, jojoba oil, and tea tree oil to oil my hair after I shampooing. I always make sure I wrap my hair every night with a satin scarf or bonnet to keep the hair from breaking.
Lastly, during the winter I wear protective styles to keep my hair hydrated.
Q: What advice would you give someone who was thinking of going natural?
A: I would encourage them to wear their hair natural and to not be discouraged by negativity.
Q: Do you have any final thoughts?
A: I want to thank everyone who helped me as I went through my stages when I first became natural! I also went to sites like MotownGirl, Fotki, Youtube that encourages women like myself to become natural and to continue with this beautiful journey.
