Q. How has your experience been with natural hair?
A: I received my first relaxer when I was 12 years old. A few years later, I opened up to my mom and told her how I did not care for my relaxed hair. These feelings were based on the burning sensation that bothered me, along with how relaxers were breaking off my hair and making it shorter. So I ended up transitioning to natural hair. I’ve been wearing my hair natural for about two years now.
Q. Did you have any support?
A. Unfortunately I got teased by my “friends” a lot, but thankfully my mom was there for me. In fact we both went natural together, which was an awesome experience!
Q: In your opinion, what has been some of the best things about having natural hair?
A: Currently my hair is about an inch past my shoulders and it’s still growing healthy and strong. I must say that it is a great feeling to be able to go out in the rain and just wash my hair and go. Also, my hair is stronger and much more healthier, compared to my relaxed hair.
Q: What is your weekly hair routine?
A: I have a simple hair routine. Every few days I work any knots I have in my hair out with my fingers. Then I put my hair in either cornrows, a ponytail or I would push it back with a headband and go with an afro or twist it, sometimes braid it or possibly a frohawk. In terms of products, I generally use any shampoo, conditioner and deep conditioner.
Q: What advice would you give someone who was thinking of going natural?
A: I would advise not listen to people when they say “it’s just hair”. Do you really want to spend so much time to get it straightened, just for your ends to break off? Also, think of the money you may save by going natural and when you can embrace your hair, you will end up spending more time with your friends and family along with doing things you love. Good luck!
