Q. Where are you from and how is the natural scene there?
A. I live in Fredericksburg, Virginia and the natural hair scene is just booming here.
Q. Did you transition to natural hair? If so, what were your experiences?
A. I have worn my hair natural for the past two months now and I transitioned while wearing hair weaves and wigs. I found that I grew very tired and frustrated with my transition to natural hair and the cost of getting hair weaves done every month.
Q. Did you have any support?
A. I work for a very conservative organization and people were very receptive to my change, which made me pleasantly surprised. Thankfully, my family was never an issue, since they are genuinely very supportive people. Also, my husband never batted an eye…I have been very fortunate.
Q. In your opinion, what has been some of the best things about having natural hair?
A. I am an athletic person, who enjoys a lot of outdoor activities. It’s nice to be able to get sweaty from hiking, swimming and being in the gym, and not have to worry about about my hair.
I feel like I have a luxury that I initially thought was only for women with straight hair. For example being able to wash and go, get caught in the rain, or my husband can touch my hair without a bunch of goopy product ruining my pillowcases or furniture.
Q. What is your weekly hair routine?
Q. What advice would you give someone who was thinking of going natural?
A: Skip the transition and go straight for the big chop. Save yourself money, time, frustration and anxiety.
Q. Any final thoughts?
A: I really feel authentically me for the first time in a long time and I absolutely love it! It’s like breathing fresh hair for the first time.
