Q. Where are you from and how is the natural scene there?

A. I’m from Chicago, Illinois. I find the Windy City is full of natural women and salons that cater to natural hair care.

Q. Did you transition to natural hair? If so, what were your experiences?

A. Since I don’t believe in prolonging the inevitable, I never transitioned. I must admit that I have gone back and forth between relaxed hair to natural hair for the last 4 years. I got my first relaxer in the 4th grade and wore it until college. One day I grabbed my roommate and made her chop off my hair. It was just so liberating and doing that made me fall in love with my hair all over again. After the big chop, I have to share that I did go out and purchase a lot of big earrings to help me adjust to having no hair.

Since then, I have had some chemical relaxer treatments put back into my hair, but would always get frustrated and just chop my hair back off.

Q. Did you have any support?

A. My family has been supportive all the way through, in fact my mother has worn her hair natural for years — so it wasn’t a shock to anyone.

Q. Has there been any differences in your life after going natural?

A. I have more time in my day which has been great! I never realized how much time I spent on using heat and keeping salon appointments. My hair is complimented often (even from strangers). I feel there is such a powerful confidence that I exude through my natural beauty after I cut my hair off.

Q. In your opinion, what has been some of the best things about having natural hair?

A. There has been so many things, such as not having to run when it rains or having to make hair appointments every two weeks. Also, I’ve learned so much about myself along with hair care. Lastly, I have realized the importance of experimenting with new products (I’m definitely a product junkie).

Q. How do you maintain your hair?

A. I swear by the entire Carol’s Daughter hair care line. I use their Black Vanilla Leave In Conditioner and the Honey Hair Mimosa pomade. Those are great for every day use. I shampoo with Creme of Nature and love how soft my hair feels. I recently discovered Kinky Curly’s Curling Custard.

I try to get my hair trimmed every 2 months, which helps with the tangles. In the future, I would also like to try more natural hair products and make my own from items in my kitchen.

Q. If you were stranded on a deserted island and had to choose three items for your hair, what are three things you would have to have for your hair?

1. A wide tooth comb: To help with detangling

2. Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Leave In Conditioner: I love the scent

3. Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise: Great for deep conditioning

Q. What advice would you give someone who was thinking of going natural?

A. Do it! It’s one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.
