I am from Baltimore, Maryland and I see many people wearing natural hair in my area.
I have worn my hair natural for almost a year and a half now. I did not transition from relaxed hair to natural hair, I just cut it all off myself. My experience was very positive, as I had natural and non-natural hair wearers around me providing encouragement. It is always good to get positive feedback, especially when you receive comments such as ‘you look so much younger without all of the hair weave.’
I’m very thankful that I received lots of support. When I reflect on my natural hair journey, I didn’t receive any negative feedback.
If I had any negative experiences because of my decision to wear my hair natural, I haven’t noticed.
My hair is now stronger and thicker. I’ve become healthier and my mind is free and clearer. I fear only God now. I’m not afraid to take risks.
When wearing my dry afro, I co-wash every 4-5 days. Next I use sponge rollers with end papers while damp, and in the morning I remove them and fluff out my hair out using my hands. I do this step at the beginning of the 4-5 day period, for instance if I sponge roll my hair on Saturday night, it will last until Thursday without having to sponge roll again, until I wash my hair again on Friday. P.S. I use no setting lotion when rolling my hair.
It’s so pretty and my hair turns into a big fro, as the sponge roll curls my hair proceeds to loosen throughout the week. I grease my scalp twice a day with Dr. Miracle Hot Gro grease now that I have color (which I colored myself). Also, I use Walgreen’s Bio-Infusion Line Shine serum for my scalp and hair.
For the wet and dry look, I only co-wash and I haven’t used shampoo in a year. I co-wash using Suave and Walgreen’s Bio-Infusion Deep Conditioning treatment.
My biggest piece of advice is to “Go Natural” only because you want to. It’s not for everyone, but everyone should give it some consideration.
Have fun with the natural hair experience and ask questions. Try stopping people on the street that are wearing natural hair and just get other their opinions from their experiences. Keep in mind all of us natural girls have been there. Don’t get discouraged, natural hair shrinks. You have to work it day by day, because you never know what you’re going to get with natural hair, it shrinks like crazy, but I love it!
