Where are you from and how is the natural scene there?
I’m from Amsterdam (The Netherlands) The natural scene over here is becoming more and more hot. More women are thinking about growing natural.
How long did you transition and how long have you been natural?
At first I wanted to transition and I did that for maybe 4-5 months, but I didn’t had the patience so I just chopped it all of. The second time i went natural, I transitioned for like 4 months and just like the first time, I chopped it off again. In january I will be natural for 2 years. I’m just loving it!
How you feel about your natural hair in the beginning?
The first time I went natural it was too short for me. I have really really thick hair and I couldn’t wait for my hair to grow fast. I do not have a problem with my growth but I just wanted to grow faster. So I bought some hair grow pills, but I couldn’t stick with it. Either I forgot to take them or I was just too lazy.
The first time I went natural I putted a texturizer in my hair, but the second time I was like: no junk this time. (the second time my growth was longer) so I could make small twists with it. At first I thought I looked like a boy. I’m really creative with my hair. I’m call myself a hairstylist so it was kind of difficult for me at the time, since Ii could only do limited things with my hair. But someway I made it trough. I guess my hair grew fast because I can’t remember a lot about that period.
How much support did you receive when you decided to go natural?
After my first time I relaxed it again (mistake). Before i did the second chop I told my momma, my sis and friends. My friends were confused with my desicion. When I went natural the first time, it encouraged my sister to go natural too, and now she is. I think now, that I support/inspire people more then they supported me because I was the one who started it in my circle and now many went natural and/or diggin my style.
Has there been any differences in your life from going natural?
You can do so many things with natural hair. I get lots of compliments about my hair and my hairstyles now, more then I got from when I had a relaxer.
What has been the best thing about being natural?
The many things you can do with it. I never think about getting a relaxer again. I just press it and flat iron it. It doesn’t look the same as a relaxer and it does not last long, but it’s good enough for me.
How do you take care of and maintain your hair?
I usually twist my hair, then wear a twist out. I put pure shea butter on my scalp (good for growth). When I put on my twists I usually mix bergamot with a moisturizer. Or just lock and twist gel. Sometimes when I wear my own hair structure I put on a mix of IC gel, bergamot grooming, water and noodlehead. I do the ´no-shampoo´ routne (got it from MotownGirl – thank you! ) and lastly,I deep condition it always.
What advice would you give someone who was thinking of going natural? Don’t hesitate, just give it a try. I’m not saying that it’s easier, because you still would need to keep it look neat and healthy.
Any Last Words?
To all of the naturals/napturals all over the world – never be ashamed of what God Almighty gave you!
