Stephanie

Q. Where are you from and how is the natural scene there?

A. I am originally from Atlanta, Georgia, but I currently reside in Huntsville, Alabama. The natural scene here is surprisingly larger than expected, as there are lots of natural sisters here.

Q. Did you transition to natural hair? If so, what were your experiences?

A. I have been natural since September 22, 2009. I transitioned for 11 months – I mostly wore sew-ins during that time.

Q. Did you have any support?

A. I had great support from my husband and he was delighted when I suggested that I wanted to go natural. All of my friends were on board too, but my mom was kind of the lone holdout. She thought it was just another phase, as I have always experimented with my hair. My mom now realizes that this is more of a long term decision and not just a passing fad.

StephanieQ. In your opinion, what has been some of the best things about having natural hair?

A. Not being controlled by my hair has been the best thing about going natural. Secondly, not having to worry about or completely change my day based on my hair, has been actually less stressful. Now after 27 years of living, I finally feel like I am being my authentic self. I just love embracing the new me!

Q. How do you maintain your hair?

A. I wash my hair once a week with Organix Coconut Milk Shampoo. I co-wash about twice a week, and I use Garnier Fructis Leave-In Conditioner Creme on my hair daily along with my homemade shea butter mixture.

Also, I deep condition my hair once a week with Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner and jojoba oil. Lastly, I usually put essential oils on my hair at night before going to bed.

Q. What advice would you give someone who was thinking of going natural?

Research and make the decision for yourself, when you feel comfortable. Don’t worry about the responses you’ll get from others, because this will benefit you! The Internet is packed with so much more information and tips, as there are tons of websites for naturals.

StephanieQ. Any final thoughts?

A. I have always noticed sisters rocking afros or locs, and have always thought it was so beautiful to see women of color with natural hair.

Even though I haven’t been natural for that long, I am thankful for the opportunity to share my experiences on MG. I know that I will only learn more in time. Thank you so much!!!
