Q: Where are you from and how is the natural scene there?

A: I am originally from Camden, South Carolina. Presently I am enrolled in the military and currently stationed in South Korea. During my time here, I have seen a few black women with natural hair. The last time I was home, I don’t recall seeing a lot of people with natural hair.

Q. How has your experience been with natural hair?

A: I have been natural for five months now and so far my experience has been pretty good. My transition lasted for only three months since I got tired of dealing with two textures (straight hair from my relaxer and my kinky natural hair.) I went to a friends house (who’s a professional) and she cut my relaxed hair off, leaving only about an inch. I’ve received more compliments on my hair now, that I’m natural.

Q. Did you have any support?

A. When I started transitioning to natural hair, I didn’t tell very many people I was planning on going natural. In terms of support, I didn’t get any support from friends, since none of them have natural hair. The only person I received support was from my mom – she has been natural for as long as I can remember. Besides my mom, the rest of my family did not understand why I chopped my hair off.

Q: In your opinion, what has been some of the best things about having natural hair?

A: It’s wonderful not having to run inside when it rains (LOL). For me, the last straw came when I went to a salon to get a wash, highlights, and a trim – the bill was pricey. The cost over $80, so I said to myself – “no more!” I was also tired of the breakage due to the relaxers. Presently, I no longer have to deal with the “burned hair” or the after relaxer chemical smell.

Q: What is your weekly hair routine?

A: For the most part I use Garnier Fructis products. Approximately once a week, I wash my hair and about twice a week I condition it. I also use Carol’s Daughter Lisa’s Hair Elixir to soften my hair. I choose to do my own hair because I’m scared to let anyone else do anything besides braid it. As far as styles go I mostly do twists and wash-n-go’s.

Q: What advice would you give someone who was thinking of going natural?

A: It’s nice to be able to jump into a swimming pool with no worries! There are so many other benefits, so my advice is to go for it and don’t be afraid of what people think!
