Q: Where are you from and how is the natural scene there?

A: I live in Warrenton, Georgia and it’s very country here and unfortunately the natural hair scene is virtually non-existent.

Q. How has your experience been with natural hair?

A: Back in 2003 I had a bad hair experience…I ended up dying my hair bleached blonde and I ended up having to cut it all off because of all of the damage. At the time my hair was relaxed and down my back. So I cut my hair off and have been natural ever since then. I am still in love with my hair and I love the way it looks.

Q. Did you have any support?

A. For quite a while, my sister and husband were urging me to stop wearing wigs and braids and just go natural. Keep in mind, the whole process is a mental transition as well. When I finally did it, I received so much support from my family, along with co-workers. During this period, I really needed it, since I was 38 years old and really hadn’t embraced my natural hair, since I was a kid.

Q: In your opinion, what has been some of the best things about having natural hair?

A: The most positive is my hair is more healthy and not over processed with a perm like most of my life…but I love not having to sit in a salon for hours like I’m at work

Q: What is your weekly hair routine?

A: I wash my hair with natural shampoos from www.butterbyjolez.com and also I use homemade conditioner made with mayonnaise or avocado.

Q: What advice would you give someone who was thinking of going natural?

A: Don’t wait to do the big chop…just go for it because it’s the best decision you can make for the health of your hair.

Q. Any final thoughts?

A: Natural hair is wonderful — no muss, no fuss. In my humble opinion it’s very easy to maintain, and the less chemicals you intake or put on your hair the better off you will be.
