Q: Where are you from and how is the natural scene there?
A: I’m from St. Louis, Missouri and the natural scene is slowly picking up in this area, but it still remains not the norm for most women. Recently, I have began to notice that both more women and men are getting locs. Meanwhile others are deciding to wear loose natural hair, although that is still less common.
Q. How has your experience been with natural hair?
A: I stopped getting relaxers in March of 2010 and I immediately started wearing Remy Hair sew-ins for six months at a time to gain new growth. By wearing sew-ins, I avoided the TWA phase and I had a tiny afro after chopping the last of the relaxed ends off of my hair last September. However, this also caused my ends to split and my hair became unhealthy, but curable with a pair of shears and patience.
Q. Did you have any support?
A. I received support from my fellow natural-haired sisters (2 friends and 3 co-workers) but other than that it was all negative influences. At first my mom was not thrilled with me going natural because she feared it could interfere with my work being that it was a conservative environment. Also, she thought our genes produced nappy and unruly hair (stereotypical) but didn’t realize most of it was due to the lack of moisture and treatments (not relaxers). After seeing my commitment and dedication to styling my hair and ensuring it’s health, she finally came around and became a fan! There’s still some negative comments in the workplace, but along with the natural hair came the attitude and confidence that I manage.
Q: In your opinion, what has been some of the best things about having natural hair?
A: The main positive thing about being natural for me has been the health of my hair. I’ve never seen my true texture due to getting relaxers at a young age and now I’m just loving every minute of my naturally curly sometimes kinky hair! Really all I need to achieve a spiral curl look is a jar of Eco-Styler gel and a small tooth comb. I have had success using this technique to make my curls and coils pop. I’m also a fan of the positive compliments and the fact it can strike up conversations with random natural sisters anywhere.
Q: What is your weekly hair routine?
- I give my hair a Protein Treatment with Joico K Pak Reconstructor or I will mix two eggs and three teaspoons of olive oil and apply it to my hair.
- Lastly, I take a Biotin Vitamin Supplement to give my hair the nutrients and vitamins that it requires since I don’t eat very healthy. Biotin is beneficial to growing thicker and healthier hair quicker.
